Center for American Archeology

Students- are you fascinated by archeology and curious about how scientists study ancient peoples and cultures? Our High School Field School is your opportunity to participate in authentic archeological research designed to learn more about the prehistoric peoples of the lower Illinois River valley, one of the richest archeological regions in the Midwestern United States. Working with our staff and interns, you will have the chance to learn the basics of field excavation, laboratory processing, and how archeologists develop their interpretations of sites based upon the information they collect. It’s a great way to explore your interest in this field!

If you’re a self-motivated, hardworking individual interested in experiencing archeology and science first-hand, who doesn’t mind physical work (excavation, screening, laboratory work) in the Midwestern US during the summer, who loves getting muddy and being outdoors, and who likes to have fun, then you’ll enjoy our program.
