Denison University - Writing Workshop

Do you love to write? Do you spend hours writing poems and stories, reading voraciously, imagining characters and entire worlds? Do you wish you had more opportunity to learn to write creatively than your high school curriculum allows? If you are looking for the chance to spend time this summer with a community of like-minded young writers from around the country, then the Reynolds Workshop is for you.

The Jonathan R. Reynolds Young Writers Workshop is designed to give beginning poets and writers an opportunity to develop their talents and visions. Our Writers Workshop puts you in touch with the variety a life in writing has to offer.

The eight-day Workshop encourages high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors to explore, discover, and affirm the craft of writing while in residence on the beautiful campus of Denison University in Granville, Ohio.

The Reynolds Workshop establishes a community of respect and sharing in which you will learn what it means to be a writer through daily workshops, group talks, readings, informal encounters with renowned professional writers, one-on-one conferences, and other events.

The History and Tradition of Writing at Denison

The Program

The Reynolds Young Writers Workshop, now in its sixteenth year, aims to give high school and college-bound students the opportunity to develop their skills as writers of poetry, fiction and nonfiction through intensive workshops, lectures, readings, social encounters with visiting writers and faculty in Denison’s creative writing program.

Writing at Denison

For more than 60 years, Denison University has excelled at helping writers develop at the college level. Denison students have written their way into national literary journals, won national writing competitions, and attended the best of the nation’s graduate-level creative writing programs. Denison alumni enjoy national stature as professional writers of poetry, fiction, drama, nonfiction, film script writing, and criticism.

Denison’s Campus

Denison’s 1,200-acre hilltop campus features a mixture of historic and contemporary buildings, and includes a 350-acre biological reserve. All buildings–academic, residential, and athletic–are within walking distance of each other as well as of the quaint Village of Granville, which helps build a close-knit sense of community.

Denison’s library and technology resources are available to Reynolds Workshop participants. The library’s collection of over 418,000 volumes is part of the Consort Library group, with over 2,650,000 volumes available on short notice. Students have full access to Denison’s recreational facilities, including basketball, tennis, and volleyball courts and a swimming pool.

Summer in Granville

Denison University overlooks the town of Granville, a quaint New England-like village of 4,800 residents. Just a short walk from campus, Granville’s main street offers a number of shops and cafes to explore. Located within a 45-minute drive from Columbus, Granville provides a beautiful and safe community that has nurtured writers for generations.
